About the Office

Located in Miller Library Second Floor, Extension 7883

The Office of Academic Skills is available to all students who wish to acquire additional learning strategies and support for academic success at Washington College. In addition, the office supports the curricular needs of students with documented learning differences and special needs.

Learning Strategies Workshops

Through individual and small group counseling and instruction, the Director assists students in acquiring helpful strategies and techniques necessary to excel in college-level work. These skills include topics such as discipline-specific study strategies, time management; academic goal setting; lecture listening and note-taking: textbook reading and study; test-taking strategies; the Mindmap Organic Study Technique; and range/speed reading for comprehension and retention.

Structured Study and Individualized Tutoring

Peer Tutors in a variety of subjects are also available through OAS. Early requests are highly recommended. An individual tutor in the appropriate discipline can be assigned as soon as possible. Depending on the number of requests in a particular course, peer tutors may structure a study group of students to form a collaborative learning experience. Call 410-778-7883 today to request your tutor!

Students with Special Needs

Students with documented special needs or learning differences who seek accommodation from the College should provide updated copies of appropriate documentation (within 3 years) to the Director of OAS. The Director will meet individually with students to discuss their needs and how to approach professors about accommodations. Students are encouraged to request accommodations early in the semester.

Documentation may be faxed to Ms. Cassandra Green at 410-778-7884 or mailed to her at: Office of Academic Skills, 300 Washington Avenue, Chestertown, MD 21620
